What does PBIS stand for?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
What is PBIS?
PBIS is NOT a scripted program or curriculum. It is a team-based approach to creating safer and more effective schools. PBIS is a framework for teaching and supporting positive behaviors and creating a school environment that is more conducive to learning. Through school-wide PBIS, a continuum of behavior supports (including rewards and consequences) is implemented in all areas of the school including the classroom, lunchroom, restrooms, and playground. The primary goal is to arrange an effective environment that encourages pro-social skills and prevents the development of problem behaviors.
Just like reading and math, behavior and social skills can be taught. PBIS uses research-based, proactive strategies to define, model, teach and support behavioral expectations and then reinforce and reward students for these positive behaviors.
It is about creating a safe, nurturing and productive school environment to increase overall teaching and learning.

Who is PBIS for?
School-wide procedures and processes intended for ALL students and ALL staff. PBIS is grounded in differentiated instruction and offers a range of interventions and supports based on individual student need. Within this continuum, all students receive preventative supports at the universal/primary level. If the behavior of some students is not responsive, more intensive supports are provided through group contingencies or individual support plans.
