Research has shown that positive consequences are much more powerful than negative consequences for improving behavior. Recognizing and rewarding students for demonstrating expected behaviors is one of the most effective tools for both promoting positive behaviors and managing/correcting undesired behaviors.
- Creates incentive, increases motivation and effort
- Increases resilience, helps to embed an internal desire to succeed & persist
- Helps reinforce positive behaviors and expectations
- Builds rapport and trust, boosts confidence and self-concept

Using Positive Language
Starters for Giving Positive Feedback and Encouragement
Creating a Simple Reward System
1. Talk with your child about things they like and activities they enjoy. Create a list of rewards they can work for. These do not have to cost money- it could be extra time together, a trip to the park, a movie at home, a later bedtime, etc.
2. Create a way to keep track of the positive behaviors you are focusing on. You might use smiley faces or stickers on a chart, or a list of responsibilities children can check off themselves as they are completed.
3. Set up rules about how a privilege or reward will be earned and when the child will receive it. Determine how often you will check-in and track progress each day.
